Headaches vary in their location, severity and associated symptoms. A familiar recurring pattern is different from a sudden or markedly changed headache.
What the video visit can help with
Describe when the pain began, whether it resembles previous episodes and what you have taken. Mention changes in vision, weakness, fever, an injury or pregnancy. Those details may change which kind of care you need.
When an examination or testing may be needed
A video visit cannot rule out every serious cause of a headache. An examination or imaging may be needed, particularly for a new, severe or unusual episode.
Discussing treatment
For appropriate non-emergency concerns, the clinician can discuss your current plan, medication questions and follow-up. A prescription depends on the evaluation and does not replace ongoing care for a recurring problem.
When to get care in person
A sudden extremely severe headache, new weakness or confusion, or a headache with a stiff neck and fever needs emergency assessment. Do not use a routine online visit to delay that care.
Before your visit
Keep a brief record of when headaches occur and what medicines you use. Mention how often you take them, including over-the-counter products, rather than only the prescription names.
